TEHRAN (IQNA) – The number of Iranians who have registered their name to take part in this year’s Arbaeen marches in Iraq has reached a record high, an official said.

Hojat-ol-Islam Sohbatollah Rahmani, deputy of Iran’s Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization, told IQNA that so far, more than 2.7 million Iranians have registered their name at the Samah website to participate in the Arabeen marches.

He noted that the highest number of people from Iran taking part in the spiritual journey was 2.5 million in 2016.

This while there are ten days left before the deadline for registration, and many more people are expected to sign up for the journey, he added.

Hojat-ol-Islam Rahmani further said that the four border crossings from which the Iranian pilgrims leave for Iraq, namely Shalamcheh, Chazzabeh, Mehran and Khosravi are running without a problem.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias, including many Iranians, flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Arbaeen falls on October 19 this year.
