Al-Azhar Chief Stresses Correct Translation of Islamic Texts

IQNA – The president of Al-Azhar Islamic University in Egypt underlined the need for paying special attention to correct translation of Islamic texts.

Addressing a conference on “technology, translation, and language teaching; prospects and challenges”, Salama Dawood said lack of precision in translating Islamic texts could lead to distortion of the image of Islam, its rules and its concept, Al-Liwa website reported.

He also said translation is the path to conveying culture and thought to different languages.  

Dawood noted that the West achieved its progress thanks to the translation of Islamic sciences and intellectual heritage.

Also speaking at the conference, which was held in Cairo, was Al-Azhar deputy Mohamed al-Duwaini.

He referred to the growth of Islamophobia in the world in recent years and described it as a phenomenon that seeks to undermine Islam and spread hate against Islam.

He said those who study the phenomenon know well that a lack of precision in translating Islamic texts and conveying Islamic teachings and thoughts to the West have contributed to phenomenon.
