TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iranian cultural official highlighted the importance of knowledge in Islam, saying that there are more than 300 epistemological verses in the Quran.

Over 300 Epistemological Verses in Quran: Scholar

Ayatollah Mahmoud Mohammadi Araqi made the remark in the second conference on "Quran and Epistemology” held at Allameh Tabatabaei University in Tehran on Monday.

He stressed that the Quran is not a philosophy book but "in Quranic issues, I have not found a topic related to the field of epistemology that has not benefited from the Quran.”

The member of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution cited verse 7 of Surah al-Baqarah "Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment,” as an example of epistemology in the Quran, saying that when God talks about Kuffar (non-believers), one of the characteristics mentioned is epistemological.

Ayatollah Mohammadi Araqi also referred to verse 179 of Surah al-Aaraf, "And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless,” saying the words mentioned in this verses can be viewed as being in the field of Quranic epistemology.
