TEHRAN (IQNA) – The al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, Bahrain’s main opposition group, called for the launch of comprehensive and earnest dialogue between the government and the opposition.

Al-Wefaq in a statement underlined the need for dialogue for resolving the country’s problems within the framework of a national plan, Al-Ahed News reported.

The group referred to a recent statement released by Bahrain's most prominent Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim, and said the senior cleric has underlined that the upcoming election in the country would be pointless if it is going to lead to a parliament that would represent the government instead of the people.

Al-Wefaq said wisdom, rationality and patriotism necessitate the formation of a parliament that would resolve people’s problems, which is the natural duty of all parliaments.

Sheikh Qassim has said that drawing up a new constitution is the only way out of the political crisis in the protest-hit tiny Persian Gulf country, urging the regime in Manama to pursue an agreement with the Bahraini opposition instead of increasingly suppressing dissent.

Demonstrations have been held in Bahrain on a regular basis ever since a popular uprising began in mid-February 2011.

The participants demand that the Al Khalifa regime relinquish power and allow a just system representing all Bahrainis to be established.

Manama, however, has gone to great lengths to clamp down on any sign of dissent.
