India Demolishes 3-Century-Old Mosque in Uttar Pradesh
Local officials said the mosque was coming in the way of 709 AD Panipat-Khatima highway in Sherpur village.
The SDM of Muzaffarnagar Parmanand Jha was quoted by local media as saying that the residents in the area were asked to relocate the mosque several times but as the deadline passed, the mosque had to be demolished.
“Two more religious structures built on govt land are to be pulled down in the same stretch of the highway,” he said, adding that the action was being taken for development so that the national highway could be widened.
Indian officials said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had issued a notice dated November 15 to civic bodies regarding the demolition of a dome-shaped bus stand on Mysuru-Ooty Road. It has given a 3-day deadline to demolish the shelter.
“If the competent authorities fail to take action, NHAI will take action as per the Highway Administration Act 2003,” the notice read.
