Islamophobic comments from the owner of a TV station in India has drawn anger among Muslims in the country.

Muslim protest in India

Sudarshan TV’s owner and chief editor Suresh Chavhanke recently supported provocations against Muslims and called for their expulsion from the country.

Chavhanke, known for his far-right extremist ideology, described Muslims as “evils” and said they should abandon their homes and shops, Al Jazeera reported.

Earlier, photos circulated in social media showing notices on the houses and shops of Muslims threatening them and warning them to leave before the middle of June.

Muslims have condemned such Islamophobic moves, wondering why judiciary officials are doing nothing to stop them.

They have also criticized Twitter for allowing such content which explicitly calls for ethnic cleansing.

About a dozen families have fled Purola, a small town in northern India’s Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand state, after notices were pasted on homes and businesses asking them to vacate the town.

The threats have been issued mainly by two far-right Hindu groups – the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and its youth wing, the Bajrang Dal.

For decades, right-wing groups in Uttarakhand have mobilized Hindus to create a “Devbhoomi” (or land of the gods) and exclude Muslims.
