MECCA (IQNA) – Chinese pilgrims have been praised for their civic spirit after they were seen cleaning streets and sidewalks before leaving the holy city of Mecca.

A Viral video has been shared on social media platforms, showing Chinese pilgrims collecting the leftovers from one of the tunnels in the holy city.

Ibrahim bin Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, Deputy Mayor of Mecca, invited these pilgrims to his office and honored them with gifts and shields.

He thanked and appreciated the pilgrims for their initiative, which he said helped to raise environmental awareness among pilgrims and encouraged them to promote environmental culture to keep Mecca clean.

Musa Boi Long, Secretary-General of the Chinese Hajj Affairs Office, expressed his gratitude to Saudi Arabia and its agencies for serving the pilgrims.

China's first Hajj mission was in 1955 and consisted of only 20 pilgrims. In 2016, China reached a record number of about 14,000 pilgrims, a third of whom were women from different regions of China.
